Ready for the weekend?
0 Comments Published August 29th, 2007 in Southern Utah People, Southern Utah Talking Points and Questions. That was the way the St. George Spectrum headlined their lead article in today’s newspaper.
The headline should have been:
Do this, don’t do that!
From top to bottom, the article was filled with rules, more rules, and stuff you gotta watch out for. In order, they are …
- ATV riders, don’t bother the boaters.
- Boaters, don’t bother the ATV riders.
- Don’t get sunburned.
- Drink lots of water.
- Don’t fall on the rocks.
- Don’t wreak your boat on sunken logs.
- Gunlock Reservoir stinks this year.
- Your boat has to meet all the Utah state rules.
- ATV riders have to wear helmets.
- Boat users have to carry proof of insurance.
- Underage boaters and ATV riders have to have proof they took a safety course.
- Underage people can’t drink alchohol.
- There’s serious fire danger this year; fireworks are prohibited.
- Be careful with campfires.
- Don’t drive fast off road; you can get stuck or turn over in a mudhole.
- Wear a seat belt at all times.
- Don’t drive under the influence of alchohol or drugs.
- Fatalities are up 200 percent this year.
Seriously! The whole, headlined article. Nothing but rules.
Well … Actually, the article did include this: “We would like to have people come out and have a good time,” Laura Melling, managing ranger at Sand Hollow State Park said.
Gee! Thanks, Laura!
It actually gets better. The attention grabbing (But copyrighted, otherwise, I would have included it here. More rules!) picture for the article is an ATV rider breaking A BUNCH of the rules that the article is all about. The ATV rider in the picture is clearly driving faster than allowed, with no helmet, with a little kid up front and in the water (where he would disturb both fishing and boaters).
Does anyone else notice this huge gap between what we say and what we do these days?
