My Prediction:
Republicans will have more to regret about Larry Craig than just Larry Craig.

Except that most voters in Color Country are Republicans (in common with most voters in Utah), this blog doesn’t really have too much to do with the St. George neighborhood. But there’s something happening in the Larry Craig scandal that I’ve never heard anyone else mention. So I decided to do it.

For those who might have been on Mars during the past week, Larry Craig is the Senator from Idaho who pled guilty to a charge of soliciting sex from an undercover policeman in an airport men’s room.

It seems pretty obvious that Craig was guilty of gross stupidity. And I won’t go into that any more. It’s just too easy.

But was he, in fact, guilty of soliciting sex in a men’s room? Republicans from Idaho to Washington and all points in between simply don’t seem to care. Every one seems concerned about only one thing: Saving a senatorial seat in a normally “safe” state. Larry Craig? Who cares? Let him (in the immortal words from the Nixon administration) “twist slowly in the wind”.

I listened to the audio of the arrest interview too. I heard Craig’s explanation. It seems to me that maybe, just possibly, he might be telling the truth. But were any Republican’s willing to give him the benefit of a doubt. No way! Not when there is political power at stake!

These people really don’t care about anything except power!

And, somehow, I think that people are going to notice. Or at least, I hope they do. And if they do, the damage that will do to the Republican thirst for power may be more damaging than anything Larry Craig could have done by himself.
