The Best Mexican Place in St. George

Paula’s Cazuela

First, I have no idea what a ‘Cazuela’ is.

Paula’sFans of Mexican restaurants know that the most important thing is the salsa. If the salsa is good, the restaurant is good. Paula’s salsa is *good*!

It’s the chunky tomato style with just the right ratio of tomatos, peppers, and onion. And the cilantro isn’t overpowering like some of them. Paula’s salsa has a nice hint of black pepper. It’s spicy, but it won’t curl your toes.

It gets better!

They give my wife and I our own dish so we don’t have to pass one back and forth. As yummy as this stuff is, I generally empty my dish eating it like a main course and they’re really great about filling it up again. I think most people have more than one.

Oh … they serve other things too.

My wife and I are as veggie as we can be. When you eat out, it’s not easy. So I have what Paula’s calls “nachos”. They break a taco shell in half and cover it with refried beans, cheese, and sliced jalapeños. I like em! My wife gets the veggie burrito and she reports that it’s filled with a tasty blend of green and red peppers, onions, and black olives. Prices are moderate. It’s not Taco Bell cheap, but it won’t break the budget.

One of the really nice things about Paula’s is that it’s a comfortable, neighborhood place. But it has special perks that put it a cut above too. Perched on the side of a hill above Bluff Street, it has a great view of St. George from the windows. It has an inviting atmosphere and a friendly staff that all seem to know Paula from way back.

Map of Paula’s in St. GeorgeWhich brings me to Paula Dominguez. She’s been in the restaurant business for over twenty years and she cooked in one before that. She and her husband Conrad are long time St. George people. Conrad had a long career with both the St. George police and the Washington County Sheriff’s department.

They open at 11:00 for lunch and you get there by exiting Bluff Street up the reasonably steep Ridgeview Drive. Look for the sign on the hill above the building. There’s plenty of parking in front.
