Ted Stevens found guilty on all counts!
This isn’t news. (You have undoubtedly heard it by now.) It’s not analysis. It’s pure, personal satisfaction.
He deserved it …
- First, for unashamed, in your face, lies!
I’ve written before about how an environment of constant lies is the acid corroding the structure of our society. Ted Stevens was found guilty of lying! That’s great.
- Second, for putting himself first and the nation second.
Stevens was a United States senator. Not an Alaska senator. Not a Republican senator. But he never put his country first.
- Third, because … in his own words … he was a “mean, miserable SOB.”
That’s not a criminal offense, but it does make it just that much sweeter.
I agree. I’ve had half an eye on Stevens for years and he is a genuinely nasty piece of work.
Then you should like my next blog too. I’m working on it right now. It should be posted in a few minutes.
“the acid corroding the structure of our society”
I like this expression, being a chemical engineer, with an electrical engineer as husband (passed away last year) and civil engineer in the family. Yes, lies were the basis of many mistakes (e.g.the Irak war ) and now the Americans start to understand as shown in the last intentions of vote.
Manou,
Thanks. I’m an engineer too. (Electrical Engineering, Computer Science).
This is the second time in my life that America has had to learn the lesson that lies cannot be the basis of war. As a young man, I marched in the streets to try to convince the rest of America that the VietNam War was simply wrong and that we were on the wrong side. It made no difference in the final analysis. The war only stopped when we had exhausted our ability to wage it.
Why did we have to learn this most tragic lesson again? I don’t know.
Your IP address suggests that you are writing from Africa. Have you been following the Doonesbury cartoon strip this week? You might like it.
Frankly no. But now, I saw it with the Sarah Palin cartoon.
I don’t know if Africa will explode with joy as said in the cartoon. It’s normal that this will be the case for Kenya.
My mother is french, my father egyptian. Both France and Egypt prefer Obama for multiple reasons. But we are conscient that he will inherit serious problems and that the range of maneuvering will be very tight. As Egyptian, I sincerely hope that the Palestinians will finally recover their land.
Yes, I’m writing from Tripoli, LIBYA
I sincerely hope the Palestinians will finally recover their land too.
I am one of very few Americans who remember that there were not many Jews in the middle east before the end of WWII and the land they occupy today was not empty before the Jews arrived. It was fully occupied by Palestinians and the Jews took the land from them.
This does not mean the Palestinians automatically own the land either. Before the Palestinians occupied the land, someone else lived there. As we go back through history, land has seldom been transferred through orderly processes of law. The normal way land has been transferred in human history is through war and conquest. If we go back far enough, this same land was occupied by people who also called themselves Jews.
When and where can we demand that taking land through war must stop? Drawing boundaries in time is as difficult as drawing them on the land.
Israel, at least, has a legal basis for their occupation of the land through the “Balfour Declaration” in the United Nations and before that in the “The Mandate for Palestine” passed by the League of Nations.
To me, however, these declarations seem unfair to those who were there before. It is not clear to me what right either the UN or the League of Nations had to give away the land of the Palestinians. But since those declarations were passed, Israel has built a nation. It would also be unfair if the achievements of Israel were to be totally ignored.
It seems to me that Palestinians have more rights to the land than they are being allowed. The State of Israel is willing to negotiate only when they make all the rules. There is something inherently unfair about this.
But all of the fault is not on the side of Israel. The Oslo Accord could have ended much of the conflict, but the Palestinians destroyed this possibility when they started the second Intifada in 2000.
I do not pretend to have the answer to this conflict that is the knot in the center of both eastern and western civilization. I do believe that it would be in the best interest of America, Israel, Palestine, and the rest of the world if America required honest negotiations from both sides in this conflict instead of taking Israel’s side in virtually all issues. Former President Carter of the U.S. has been outspoken in making some of these same points.
Unfortunately, the vast majority of Americans do not agree with me. I do not know what will happen in the future. We can only hope for the best and stand up for truth and reason when we can.
Well, Dan, it seems that you have a fairly good knowledge of history. And I agree with all that you’ve said. But don’t forget that to be jewish is the fact to have a religion and before the jews in Palestine there were Arabs and other ethnic groups with different religious beliefs. The genocide of jews was not committed by arabs. On the contrary, jews were refugees in many arab countries (and you know the legendary arab hospitality). But the solution to their calamities was given by England! at the expense of the palestinians. Don’t forget too, that in the Coran, Abraham (Ibrahim) Moise (Moussa) and Jesus are venerated as Mohamed. Moreover, Abraham is considered to be the first Muslim who believed in One God.
Ceci dit, I think that Palestinians are only demanding the respect of international laws. Don’t forget too, that the “achievements” which are undeniable, were only possible due to the unconditional support of countries like France (nuclear)…and all the nationalities (french, arabs, german, etc)of the jewish people.
Sorry to have diverted the discussion on Jews, but I think this is the core of the subject. Many are convinced that Power is represented by Weapons and Wars and that all means have to be utilised to attain POWER. But I can’t be violent or lie and acquire lOVE and RESPECT hence POWER, and that’s America has lost with Bush..
That’s why Obama is supported by so many: jews, muslims, christians.. All of them are Peace loving.
God bless the USA and the World
Dan, you’ve said:”Unfortunately, the vast majority of Americans do not agree with me” Perhaps, they are ignorant of the reality and misinformed.
They have to utilize the 3W with intelligence as Obama has done and diversify their sources of information.
Thank you again for your contribution.
I often wonder why people do the things they do. So many of the popular and deeply held beliefs and opinions of others simply do not make sense to me.
It’s worth keeping in mind that America is not the only part of the world where illogical things are done, however. Examples can be found throughout Africa where countries create their own worst problems. The thing that makes America different is that what happens here has such a huge impact on the rest of the world. All we have to do is look at the recent financial collapse – which started in America and has now spread to the entire world.
On the positive side, polls strongly suggest that Obama will win in today’s elections. The ability for a whole nation to reverse course like this in a bloodless revolution is also something that might only happen in America. Think of it as being as big a change for us as, for example, if Sarkozy were to become the leader of Libya.
And thank you for your good wishes for my country. All of us will need all the good will that we can find.
CONGRATULATIONS TO ALL OF US (french, egyptians and all the world)Method Obama McCain
