The Republicans can dish it out, but they can’t take it.

Senator Al Franken of MinnesotaRewind to December 2000. Bush leads Al Gore by only 537 votes out of 6 million cast in Florida, a smaller percentage than the 225 votes out of less than 3 million that is currently putting Al Franken ahead in the Minnesota race for the US Senate. In Minnesota, a highly contested hand recount of the vote has been completed. Bush sues to stop a hand recount that had already started. The Florida Supreme Court sides with Gore but in a 5-4 vote that will live in infamy, the US Supreme Court stops the recount. Al Gore, in a statement widely admired for its gracious patriotism, concedes the election.

The key point is that in Florida, the Republicans were not willing to make sure every vote was counted!

Fast forward to today. Two months of excruciatingly careful hand recounting have only served to place Al Franken further into the lead. But the Republicans are threatening to stretch out the process for more months in a lengthly court battle, filibustering in Congress if necessary to stop Franken from being seated.

I like Al Franken! I’ve liked him ever since he called Rush Limbaugh a big fat liar right in the title of one of his books. (But he should have also included “drug addict” and “serial polygamist”.) And I generally like anyone who is not a career politician. I’ve supported Republican Governors Ah-nold in California and Bobby Jindal in Lousiana on exactly those grounds.

Besides, Franken does one hell of a Mick Jagger impression!

“Franken joked that if elected to the Senate, in the two-week window between the Senate’s swearing in and the end of George W. Bush’s term, he would push for a “quickie impeachment.”"

    The above is from Wikipedia.

I would like it very much if, now that he finally is a Senator (right-on Minnesota!), he “un-joked” this and really tried to get it done! There are many, many people who feel that Bush should be impeached but don’t have the political balls to try it. If anyone does, it’s Franken.
