Cactus: Jewels of the Desert

June 2009 - Cactus: Jewels of the DesertDesert cactus can be found in brilliant colors from bright yellow to deep red and everything in between. But you have to be in the right place at the right time. The flowers don’t last long! Often, they’re gone again after only a few days. These contrasted beautifully with the black lava rock that is found in thick beds from the gates of Zion and out into the desert. (For an interesting fact about the Color Country lava beds, see St. George’s Inverted Geography.)

These specimens were found in a vacant lot right next to the city offices in the town of Hurricane. I was paying my utility bill when I saw them. I guess this is my reward for paying my bills.

I wasn’t too sure how the “componentized” weekly calandar would be received. I couldn’t find a square place to put it so I put it all over. Any suggestions on that?

When I first saw it I thought you had screwed up
Then I realized what you had done and why but wasn’t too crazy about it.
Now the more I look at it the less problem I have.
    Great picture — calendar included
