Summer fires do make for spectacular sunrises.

August 2009 - Fire in the Sky Over ZionThe fire season hasn’t been too bad so far. The Horse fire in the park has produced a few smokey mornings in Zion Canyon, but the Park Service has evidently decided that it’s not a problem and they’re really not even trying that hard to put it out. As it turns out, one side of the fire has burned into an area that was burnt deliberately as a managed fire. It shows the value of managed fires in the first place.

One nice thing about summer fires is that the smoke they put into the atmosphere does create some really great sunrises.

You said the fire season hasn’t been too bad so far, and for that we all are thankful. When fires are caused by humans, their “season” can be just about anytime, I would think. What is the “season” for naturally-occurring fires? What I’m trying to get at is about how long do we all have to hold our collective breath until the extreme danger is over for this season?

We seldom have fires in the winter and they’re much easier to put out when there is one. I would say that the “season” here is pretty much … ummm … June to September.

By the way, most fires here are lightning caused. The Horse fire, for example, was lightning.
