March 2010 – Looking For Breakfast
4 Comments Published February 28th, 2010 in Southern Utah Wildlife and Nature.
Last month’s calendar featured breakfast. Well … Maybe the squirrel last month would have been too big for this little guy. But the finch would have been just his size. He’s waiting in ambush for breakfast to come by.
I have read that a hawk is no match for the speed and agility of a healthy finch or sparrow. That matches what I see around here. I’ve seen hawks chase them, but I’ve never seen a hawk catch one. I almost saw it once, just out of the corner of my eye. But by the time I turned my head, all I could see was a little cloud of feathers floating down out of the sky. The sparrow probably never felt a thing.
Or it could have been that your hawk never found breakfast at your place. Because I saw either him or his brother sitting on the top of my swing yesterday. No luck there either because every bird had flown several minutes ago.Lena
I feed birds in my back yard. Lots of sparrows, finches and doves. It turns out I also feed hawks. Every once in a while I find a little pile of gray feathers by a feeder.
Good picture — thanks
I feed birds in my back yard also, but don’t have any hawks, although I see them flying in the sky around here – I’m right next to the mountains. I think they don’t come down into my yard because I have a lot of very big pine trees.
We feel a pang of sympathy for the little songbirds, but the hawk has to eat too. We don’t interfere.
He was definitely waiting for breakfast. He was there on the ground for twenty minutes or so and I got several nice shots. Here’s another picture of the little guy.
